Materials and Techniques
The clay I use is raku clay from Axner. I treat the surface with sulfates and I sometimes use wood stains post firing. A book on Hans Coper by Tony Birks describes his using Johnson's floor wax to ensure water tightness. I sometimes use post firing treatments to secure water tightness as well. My current pottery is single fired.
The fusible glass I use is primarily Bullseye glass. It is consistent and marvelous in firing but what sold me was their colors. I soften the brilliance of the glass by keeping a simple palette. I've been very pleased with some of Bulleye's newer muted tones.
I take notes about all the technical aspects of my work. If a procedure works well I can duplicate it again and not try to retrace my steps. If I had to advise my younger self years ago, I would have said take notes, be patient and start with a plan. There are many technical aspects to working with both clay and glass.
